Timothy Davis, 9, tries to get some sound out of a clarinet flute during the Long Beach (Calif.) Symphony Orchestra’s Instrument Petting Zoo at the Bret Harte Library on June 29, 2010. The music group is bringing their classic instruments to four libraries From June 24 to July 15 to introduce young children to the instruments of the orchestra. Volunteers from OVATION!, the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra’s volunteer group that supports the Symphony’s outstanding artistic, cultural and music education programs, lead a short presentation that explains the different string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. The children are then allowed to try as many instruments as they like. The goal of the Instrument Petting Zoo is to allow children to be exposed to and gain an interest in the instruments of the orchestra before they have a visit from an LBSO ensemble in the 2nd and 3rd grades.
