PHOTOS: Ronald McDonald House


LONG BEACH, CALIF. USA — Ronald McDonald checks out the construction of the Long Beach (Calif.) Ronald McDonald House on October 28, 2010. A former apartment building near Long Beach Memorial Medical Center is being gutted and rebuilt as The Long Beach Ronald McDonald House. The Long Beach Ronald McDonald House will have 23 guest rooms, a living room and open-air courtyard, plus a dining room and kitchen. There will also be a children’s room and outdoor tot lot along with a garden, patio, barbeque area, laundry, pantry and computer room. The board of trustees of the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House has raised more than $5 million for its capital campaign, passing the 80 percent mark of its goal in fundraising. See more pictures>>

George Alvarez chats with customers in his diner in the Bixby Knolls neighborhood of Long Beach, Calif. on October 18, 2010. The Alvarez’s restaurant, George’s 50s Diner, was the victim of a break-in over the weekend. The thieves took their entire stock of beef -about two weeks worth – and all but two of their 75 collector die cast model cars. George has worked at the diner for 38 years, the last 15 as the owner. THEN AND NOW: Eli Rodriguez and Jason Gutierrez, 2009 & 2010


TOP: During the 2009 Long Beach Marathon runner Jason Gutierrez seized up and had to stop in the last miles of the race. Eli Rodriguez passed him and went on to win the race in 2 hours and 27 minutes.
BOTTOM: During the 2010, long after Jason Gutierrez had won the race in 2 hours and 14 minutes. Eli Rodriguez is forced to stop and stretch about 100 yards from the finish line. Rodriguez finished the 26.2-mile race in 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Lindsay Nelson, the winner of the women’s division of the 2010 Long Beach (Calif.) International City Bank Marathon, nearly collapses as she crosses the finish line on Shoreline Drive on Sunday, October 17, 2010. Nelson finished the 26.2-mile race with a time of 2:45:08.
